how much weight can a fiberglass tub hold

I have a fiberglass tub installed in a trailer home. It is developing more cracks. The tub was patched by a pro some time ago. I weigh close to 400 LBS. I have put plastic over the crack and taped it down. I haven't been able to take a bath in some time, and only use the tub to shower about twice a week. Is this a weight issue? Is there a problem with the tub? What can I do to fix this permanently?

That I have seen - maybe 150# and even then sometimes crack. The problem is partly that fiberglass is a lousy material for a tub, which is not fully supported so it moves a lot if not made of a rigid material like cast iron. Add to that the fact very few (noe I have seen) are properly provided with reinforcing ribs and firm supports on the subfloor, so they move a lot as people move around in them and crack. Also, some would be OK on a plywood subfloor but crack if spanned over floor joists without solid plywood support under them.

Some contractors bed them in grout or foam-in-place insulation or even just blown-in bagged sand (gthough you hacve to watch the weight issue) to reduce this problem, and with some trouble (especially if not accessible from below or not on plywood subflooring) can be done after the installation.

I would say the product basically being defective is the root cause - but certainly the heavier the user, the more it will crack. (Note - acrylic is not much better).

While supporting it from below can help in some cases, for a tub already cracking might not be worth the cost for something which might not solve the problem.

Alternatives - new metal tub of course, also (although they have cracking and stagnant water be3tween the two tubs issues) an insert from a ReBath or similar company is cheaper but not as reliable or long life, but typically does cost about half a new metal tub installation.
