Solar attic fans are very effiecent and sized correctly will reduce the temperature in the attic. But,and it's a big one,if the soffits are not well ventillated, the attic fan can pull air from inside the home, that you have paid to cool.

Your walls may have some opening to the attic, common,if not sealed when built,if the fan pulls air from the home , it can be costly.

The University of Florida has tested and researched this years ago, they found then ,the issue I mentioned, plus before soalr powered fans, the electric cost to cool the attic was equal to the air conditioning cost that was saved.

We put one in on our house about a year and a half ago. It has worked great! It doesn't move alot of air ( so you don't have to worry about it sucking out any cool air from the inside of the house) but it did drop the avarage temp in the attic by 30 Deg. in the summer. If you live in a hotter climate then we do (the Pacific Northwest) then you might want to put in more than one. Check with your Roofer.

I put in a Solar Star solar attic fan by Solatube. It cut the temp by 25 degrees the next day. I am sure it would have reduced the temp immediately, but I installed it late in the day. The added comfort and reduced electric bills are great, but the 30% federal tax credit was awesome. And yes, the Solar Star qualifies for this through 2016. Check out for the details.

Good luck.
