if my gas logs are on, i smell gas when I come into the home. is this normal?

Common when they start up, but smell should dissipate within minutes - if you continuously smell gas when they are on, could remotely be a part of the burner not burning (but that is rare), more likely a leaking gas control valve or gas fitting between the gas control valve and the burner. Since you evidently only smell it when they are in use, would NOT be a leak in the supply line leading to it - would be in the gas control valve or on the fireplace side of that.

Either a Heating and A/C contractor or a Fireplaces or Gas Logs contractor (your Search the List categories) would be the category to find well-rated and reviewed vendor for this.
