Question DetailsAsked on 7/10/2015

in Charlotte NC the repair for our a/c includes an evaporator coil at $2500. Sounds very high. Is it a fair price

The repairman from MTB said there is a leak in the coil. They do not repair a coil so want to order a new one. They charged for 4 lbs of refrigerant (R410A) $111.00 first pound, $80 for each after that. They will take the cost for that off of the $2500.00 bill. We paid for the annual maintenance so service call was $45, the labor charge was $80 an hour (he worked 3 hours) Our H/AC is 6 years old.

If he coil is not covered by a 10 year parts warranty the cost to replace is not out of line.

Be sure to check the warranty, most units that age would be covered to the original owner if registered at time of install.

You may want to get a price on a higher efficiency system, using the repair cost to get a new system, with a 10 year parts warranty. Operating cost savings and no worries about parts costs for 10 years.

Replacement coil is only 1 year parts warranty, plus other failures can happen.

Wow! That seems a bit high considering you pay a annual maintenance fee. I had to replace my A-frame coil thats made up of mostly copper tubing and was only charged $450 installed. I recently had my heat pump serviced because the unit was not putting out hot air. Tech had to charge system with 2 pounds of R-22 and the total cost was $160. I think i am fortunate to have such a good and honest Tech. Im sorry you are having this problem. I think you should find another Company or Contractor to deal with.
