It sounds excessive to me but I do not know all the facts aout your install. A normal gas or electric hot water heater usually runs between $650 to $1,200.

That price varies due to the quality of the heater and warrentee, location (up or down a flight or two of stairs), if the existing install was up to code or are there venting issues to be corrected and such. Or if it is an after hours install it will run more.

If you are talking about one of the newer ones that tie into your boiler as a zone off it, it will run much more due to the fact that the units can run over $1,000 alone.

I would check with two other plumbers. Any more than three bids is excessive to me.

I would say that unless this includes running a new stack vent for your furnace, all the way through the roof, because without the water heater the existing one would be too large for code for the furnace alone, then I would say you should get a couple more bids.

The condensing vent pipe, unless really unusual circumstances like needs booster fan because it has to go uphill to get to free air, adds probably about $100-150 materials and $100 labor to a normal install. The new tap off the gas line, assuming nearby and entire line does not need upsizing, about $100 additional cost.

2 vents in the closet door, assuming normal wood or hollow door, about $70-100 additional cost too.

That would probably put a normal $600-800 water heater replacement range job into the $1000 plus a bit range - but $1700 sounds like WAY too much unless you are talking a very high efficiency heat pump system, or your water heater closet is a REALLY tight fit for what he is doing. I have seen 60 gallon totally new installs including running gas line from meter in a much higher priced area go for much less than that.

No... a BIG NO. Give him a bad rating and tell others on AL how he tried to take you!
