is rubber mulch harmful to puppies that ingest it.

my 4 month old puppy has been ingesting the rubber mulch around my flower beds and then throwing up. Is it harmful to him or should I call a vet?

YES - the rubber contains chemicals that are certainly not good for them, but can also block intestines, and commonly rubber mulch contains pieces of tire rubber with steel belting (wires) in it that can perforatestomach and intestine and cause rapid death from peritonitis. Keep the dog fenced away from the mulch FOREVER, or get rid of the mulch.


Any time a dog is throwing up is matter for concern. If you keep him TOTALLY away from the mulch and he shows no further throwing up or any digestive problems or abdominal pain if you gently squeeze him or pick him with your hands under the belly, and has normal stool thereafter then probably OK and no harm done - if anything abnormal or any tenderness in the abdominal area, sluggish, does not want to eat, drinks excessive water or none, or abnormal looking or no stool - takes to vet immediately.
