Well, I am not sure what a "jacket" for the chimney is, but for asthetics the chimney should not be painted as that prevents the necessary evaporative processes required by masonry to process the moisture that the above roof chimney is exposed to. You could remove and replace the problem bricksand mortar or if it is a lot of bricks effected then covering the exterior with facade masonry or rock or properly installed stucco would suffice as a replacement veneer. A proper masonry crown should be poured to seal the new veneer at the top and to encourage the runoff of weather moisture.

The next step is to preserve the new veneer and crown by treating the masonry with Saver Systems Masonry repellent Chimney Saver. Having the chimney inspected would help determine the overall condition related to attaching an additional veneer to the exterior. Feel free to send me photos at and I will advise further.

Hello Ash, This a common problem, Keep in mind that brick fall in and OUT of the chimney, Therefore be sure there are no obstructions in the chimney. Secure the structure before having the chimney surround installed of course. Just you make you aware these wraps are constructed of 22 Ga. steel and should carry a15 year warranty.

Good Luck,
