Did you report the dispute to Sears Home Services immediately - they could not legally start collections before resolving the complaint if you did. If you just cancelled the checks then they say that waa you welshing on your checks - so you not only have ther collection agency on your heels but a major ding on your credit report too, now.

You need to send a WRITTEN complaint to Sears (and remember, even if the repairman was a third-party repairman, you need to deal with SEARS if that is who you called - telling them why you cancelled the checks. Actually, if he cleaned the dryer that check should have been honored by you - the repiar check not till the repair was done correctly. You should not have paid for the repair till he showed the dryer turned on, turned, and heated properly - but if it failed very shortly after he left then cancelling was the right thing to do.

Note I wouldnot count on good response - you might have to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission to get their attention, because Sears appears to be on the brink of going bankrupt.

You also need to file a letter with each of the big 3 credit bureaus explaining the dispute and the fact you are challenging substandard work and the collection action.

It may also be, if they did not send billings and explanatory disclosures from Sears regarding your collections rights, that they violated the federal law by sending it (sounds like pretty quickly) to a collections agency. Consumer FInancial Protection Bureau is the agency for that - lots of info on he website about what they HAVE to do and disclose to you before starting a collections action.

To do a Review go to Write A Review at the right end of the top green banner bar - Sears repairs shows up under Sears Home Services, as I recall - or if no listings in your area then it will prompt you to start a new one for them in your area.

Oh - BTW - if you ever get call center employees who you cannot understand or who will not slow down enough for you to comprehend, ask to speak to another representative who speaks clear english or to a supervisor - you do not have to put up with call centers serving the US who do not mandate that their reps handling US calls speak comprehensible english (though may commonly be ENGLISH rather than AMERICAN if they are in India or Pakistan or Bangladesh).
