Here are a couple of prior responses to a similar question that might help you -

If that is your problem, the smell will be musty, moldy, or swampy. If the smell is like garbage, rotten meat, or greasy or just absolutely putrid, then a dead animal in the ducts is probably more likely.

Check around the furnace/evaporator area too to make sure the smell is not coming from mold or rot from a water leak from pipes or water heater, or from a floor drain in that area gone dry and letting in sewer gases, which the HVAC system is then picking up and distributing through the house.
