porch remodeling estimate?

My old porch is a single flight of steps (4-5 feet wide) and open, the new one will be the same width but with a small balcony above (open). The price i was quoted by an idependent contractor is $3895 for the whole deal. It seems a lot to me -- does anyone have any comparisons?

I've found the list invaluable for doing this kind of price comparison. Find a contractor in your area with a lot of reviews, and scroll down to see what he charged for various kinds of projects. It will help you to get a feel for the going rate in your area.

If the contractor is a good contractor and using good materials then site unseen the price is a little low. You can always find a cheaper price from someone who uses cheaper materials and has a bad work history.

Again, costs depend on where you live and the amount of work involved & materials used. Recently a neighbor obtained estimate to extend her porch approx 20 feet across a portion of her home = 1 step up from walkway (no change to entry step) & roof tied into existing porch = $6,000
