s It better to use a polyurethane or heavy paste wax on a damaged rocker

I am trying to rejuvenate a badly damaged wooden rocker. There are many areas where the finish is gone. I have covered it in scratch cover, then lemon oil and finally liquid gold, drying between each one. It looks 100% better. When putting the oils on I noticed very small flecks of the finish coming off. Would my next step be to put a furniture paste wax on or a polyurethane coating. I know it should have been officially sanded an refinished, but that is too time consuming and costly.
