While not as risky if vacant land, there are liability issues you are exposing yourself to if you let an uninsured individual or contractor come cut them down - if they damage adjacent property, utilities, themselves, passer-bys, etc.

One example I saw - a neighbor wanted big oaks gone - including stumps if possible. Another neighbor with a D-9 dozer hooked on with a chain and pulled them (well, some of them anyway, before he ran into trouble) over in one piece - took out power and telephone overhead lines with one tree which went a different way then he thought it would because of a weak root - then on the next tree, after that was cleared up - took out the gas main pulling the roots up as the tree went over - took up about a 5 foot thick by about 30 foot diameter piece of root mass - and the pipeline. Guess who ended up paying a lot of the damages because of primary responsibility - right - the homeowner because the tree felling was being done on his property.
