vellux skylights are 20 yrs, never leaked. replacing my roof, should they be reflashed, replaced or old flashing ok

my Vellux skylights are 20 years old and have never leaked. I am replacing my roof, but not my skylights The contractor tells me he will just re use the old flashing from the original skylights when doing the install. Should I have new flashing done around the skylights, new skylights ( I would rather not replace them) or is it ok to reuse the old flashing? Does it require an ice shield around the skylights?

Here are some previous similar questions - some roofers and skylight people say ALWAYS replace them, other say maybe. Certainly, with 20 year old ones, if they are mounted "in" the roofing I would replace them because I would expect seals to fail during the removal and replacement. You can also get a lot better thermal performance from new units.

If they are mounted to the roof sheathing (and that is in good enough condition to not have to replace it), with the roofing and flashing overlying the Vellux frame and factory flashing, then you could well chance it - especially if curb-mounted or if the old roofing was properly installed with no fastener penetration through the skylight flashing other as specified for mounting the unit itself.

Proper way to do this, assuming the skylight is right at the roof sheathing surface, would be to interlace new ice and water shield around the skirt, extending a couple of feet uphill of the skylight and at least a foot or more wider on each side, lying in UNDER the water barrier on the uphill side but daylighting on TOP of the water barrier (or roof-edge ice and water shield if you have that) downhill from the skylight, then usually metal flashing around it over the water barrier uphill and adjacent to the skylight which would overlap the ice and water shield and water barrier adjacent to and right downhill of the skylight - something like this:

This one shows a curb installation - to retrofit new roofing the actual skylight unit should not be disturbed - new flashing should come up under the rim flashing of the curb.

This one shows water barrier and the ice and water shield as well as the perimeter flashing - step flashing in some cases.

The exact interfacing of the various water shedding elements varies some depending on the exact configuration of the unit - but the metal step or plastic or metal rim flashing lies above the water barriers, properly interlaced with the shingles.
