Question DetailsAsked on 2/6/2016

want someone to give price on chimney fireplace for use after 75 yrs.

about 30 yrs ago we cleaned chimney and 70 yrs of soot came rolling down into the livingroom. I installed a gas line and gas logs but want to return it to a fireburning fireplace. Want to know approximate coast for this. I am in Pa about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. Near OHIO BORDER. Would like someone local if possible. Want this for next winter so I have started looking early. Any help?

I would start with a certified Chimney Sweep to clean and inspect the chimney - then you will ahve an idea if it is good to go, needs some minor repair (especially likely at the top crown area and maybe a new cap if old one is rusted out), or needs majro repair. Probably about $300 range for a full cleaning and inspection and written defect report - and if minor repairs he may well give you (or ask for) a repair cost too, if he does repairs and not just cleaning.

Another alternative which might suit you better and is more energy efficient - get it cleaned and structurally inspected as above to be sure it is safe, but then for better efficiency or if it needs a new flue for instance, have a wood burning stove put in the firebox, with double-wall stainless steel flue pipe up the inside of the old chimney and out the top - commonly much cheaper than a flue replacement, as long as the chimney is otherwise structurally sound and nor falling down on you.
