were does the shift linkage attach to the frame on an john deere lx 172

the linkage with the shifter knob is hooked to the trans but the rod on the shifter knob side at the frame is just dangling above the frame, so when you try to put in gear it has no pivot point on the frame to move it . I can see at the end if the rod it went some were but were
