There is a very resource driven web site "Ask the Builder" and they are currently doing a study on asphalt shingles (what you have). Go to this site share your info and perhaps they can help you. FYI one manu Certainteed had a problem with shingles curling up at the edges and looking like they had been blasted (in the same period as your homes roof).

If the roof has sustained damaged from hail, that would void any manufacturer or labor warranty that you may have have on your current roofing system.

If you have insurance on the home, this would be a case to file a claim. Hail damage is a cover peril under your policy. There are different types of policies for home owners.

Replacement Cost Value Policy: The insurance company will pay the full replacement cost of the damaged item(s) after you pay your deductible about

Actual Cash Value Policy: The insurance company will pay you the actual cash value of the damaged item(s). This leaves you to pay your deductible and the depreciated amount to equal the full replacement cost.

FIND some highly rated roofing companies on Angie's List. Make sure they will come out to do a FREE inspection and estimate of the damage.

IF they determine the damage to be from hail, CALL your insurance company and file a claim.

What knowledgebase stated is generally right, but there are a couple of manufacturers who sell hail-resistant shingles and, with payment of extra money for their extended warranty coverage, will do materials replacement for hail damage - but unless you have that type of shingle and a paid warranty in hand, then as he says your homeowner's insurance is the place to turn to. I do not know of any manufactuear's warranty that covers the replacement labor for this cause, and generally such warranties are pro-rated - for instance, would cover only 18/30's say of the materials replacement cost.

After 12 years any labor warranty you had is clearly expired, plus this is a materials issue, not labor or installation method related.

Oh - if as Jim says the hail damage notation was added later, that makes a difference.

If damage was NOT due to hail, just weathering, then depending on the "serivce life" of the shingles, manufacturer warranty on the shingles themselves might run anywhere from 10 (or even less with real cheapo shingles) on up to as much as 50 years if you were owner when shingled - of course, you would have to have documentation on the shingle manufacturer and proof of date they were put on and so forth.
