the check engine light on the dash of your vehicle is a indication that something is not working the way it was made to be working, take it to a shop or auto zone to have the codes taken and figuer out the problem with your car,

one thing stop driving if the light flasher or oil light comes on, all other are just warnings. good luck.

Could be anything from a sensor gone bad to a misfiring cylinder to low fluids somewhere. Check for low fluids - also check that your gas cap is fully seated, because a loose or not fully screwed in gas cap will do this too.

That message means something is wrong (even needing an oil change if you have a variable oil change indicator system) but the system does not consider it an imminent threat. The Check Engine light indicates things more serious, and if either is flashing then that means get it off the road and parked immediately or it may be seriously damaged. Generally, when under warranty, a solid light means get it in to have the computer codes checked to see if serious or not; flashing means stop driving it and they commonly hveit transported to the dealer for repairs if more thana few mile drive.

Certainly, checking dipsticks for low fluid (brake, power steering, coolant, engine oil, transmission fluid) would be a smart thing to do before driving it again, even to a repair shop or dealer.

In any case, after adding fluid or redoing gas cap you need to let it sit about 5-10 minutes (turned off) before starting it up again for the computer alert system and light to reset, if it is going to change based on whatever you do.
