This is definitely a matter of choice. Truthfully, the company installing and the process they use are more important than the actual shingle. Most people want to believe that the product is the most important because it is easier to check out. But, from my experience the installation is really more important. With that being said, Tamko has a program now that is backed by the best warranty in the industry so long as the installer is a Tamko Pro and the use the 3 complimentary products on the install. The warranty is a 30 year labor and material warranty. Our company Euro-Tech, Inc. covers Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin and yes we are a Tamko Pro roofer. Please reply back with what part of the country your from so contributors can chime in from your area.

A note on the Tamko Pro "Lifetime" warranty and the 3 complimentary products - time for a bit of truth inadvertising here, I think:

1) in this case, they are using the definition of "complimentary" that means associated or goes-together-with, meaning you have to use 3 associated Tamko products ona job to get the extended warranty - not the meaning of the word that means "free". Therefore, you have to buy and use Tamko products for essentially all the roofing materials, not just the shingles.

2) The "Tamko Pro Certified Roofing Contractor" is essentially a preferred provider program - it is NOT, contrary to what some of their advertising implies, a "Pro Certified Roofing Contractor" national certification program - it is nationwide, but is simply a designation of roofers who have chosen to register with Tamko as preferred installers of Tamko products. I have also heard from a couple of local contractors (and Tamkopro website confirms this) who asked about the program that they have been told you have to pay a substantial initial and minimum $1000 annual fee and do at least 30 jobs or 1000 squares of Tamko roofing a year to be registered to get and stay on the list, so it is almost like it is approaching a franchise situation. A Tamko Pro roofer will not necessarily be any better or worse than any other roofer.

3) If you go to their website, it become clear the "Lifetime" warranty is not that - depending on product, it extends the basic warranty to about 20-50 years maximum (10-15 year extension beyond basic warranty) - NOT for your lifetime, and there are conditions and limitations as always INCLUDING that the labor portion of the warranty does NOT include tearoff or disposal - only reapplication of new shingles. I have heard in the past from several roofers that dealing with Tamko on warranty coverage is not easy, so I can't say how useful the extended warranty using a Tamko Pro roofer is - and it does cost more to get the extended warranty because it only applies to their highest-cost products, so you do not automatically get it at no extra charge by using a Tamko Pro roofer.
