Any average would be pretty meaningless, because height, width, type and materials of construction, whether taking down to just below subfloor or totally removing down to and including the foundation, whether the chimney partly supports the house, local labor and waste disposal costs, value of recovered bricks, etc all factor into the cost.

Unless it is VERY small, you are looking at a good couple thousand $ pretty much nationwide, and in more expensive areas or with larger/heavier fireplace/chimney likely several thousand $ by the time you remove it and repair the openings in ceilings, walls, roof, etc.

You can find previous similar questions with answers and some ballpark costs in the Home > Fireplaces link under Browse Projects, at lower left, but you really need a handful or so of bids from General Contractors for this to see what the fair range for your particular situation is - or if DIY'ing the repairs, a Masonry or Demolition (no Angies List category for that) contractor.
