where is a reliable mechanic for my 1988 corvette? cleveland tn. has a lot of mechanics but they have all crooked me...

1988 corvette that misses. repl. plugs, wires dist.(no cap), have been to dealer all the way to shade tree . spent over $3500 and keeps getting worse... fed up and want it fixed or i am going to sell for about $4000 loss because if not running corectly... please please please help

If you have replaced wires, distributor, plugs and getting worse, then I would be looking at what condition the plugs were in when they came out - would have identified if you have a loafing cylinder or two due to valve, ring or compression leak issue; or if all were bad, which could be indicative of a minor but progressive head gasket failure or generalring wear. If pretty bad and on all cylinders, could be due to a timing problem or a dirty or maladjusted carb or leaking carb or intake manifold gasket letting air in so it runs too lean, or even something as simple as a plugged PCV or EGR valve, leaking or maladjusted carb float (if carb rather than fuel injected), dirty injectors or fouled injector pump or fuel pump (or fuel pump screen), plugged or leaking air pollution valve or sensor hose or sensor causing false oxygen readings so it is giving the wrong fuel/air mix - oh so many things. Could even be as simple as an electronic ignition module starting to go and sending inconsistent power to the coil(s),or a plugged air intake causing choking out. If you were not original owner, could be something as simple as it was tuned ultralean to racing specs, but as it gets older and the compression drops off a bit and the plugs get a bit cruddy, it will not run consistently that lean any more. On my Dodge 360 two of three times this happened it was a faulty coil or coil lead wire to the distributor, arcing out at high rpm but able to run OK at idle, and only detectable in the dark - arc tester did not pick it up (probably my fault). Third time it was a cracked head by the valves letting just enough coolant into a couple of adjacent cylinders that they were cooled too much to fire so they missed except at high speed.


Hope when you went to dealer and they did not fix it, you got your money back, because they should not have charged you for a problem they could not solve.


Sounds like you need a competent diagnostic mechanic - and these days they are few and far between, as most cannot add 2 + 2 without using the diagnostic computer.


My suggestion - talk to some people at the local vette clubs and try to get a consensus for a mechanic who gsts a lot of recommendations - not just one or two.
