I think basically all the brands today are about equal. Formica is the most recognized brand being one of the oldest. Many people use the name as a generic for all brands. I think in the past two years I have only used laminate tops twice, one just about 2 weeks ago. Most are going for the solid surface counters and stone counters. The laminates do not hold up to the abuse that they can take. But not everyone can afford them and laminate has its place. With the new edgings they have today they do look closer to the stone tops that are popular. I recently have been involved with my son and daughter-in-law's house hunting and it has been funny to hear some of the relators say that the house had granite tops when in fact they were laminate. With care they can last many years. Just protect them from burns and scratches as they are impossible to repair.
