Sod is a living organism, once it is installed it can live or die based on the conditions of the enviroment it is in. In the same way you'd get a pet animal, it may be healthy when you leave the pet shop but how you care for it wil determine wheather or not it is healthy down the road.

Sod companies don't want to take responsibility for the ground contitions or the customer's care of the sod. Both are out of their control and have a big impact on the product.

Some do give up to a 1 year warranty - some only if you hire them for the installation and to do the watering/maintenance for the year, some require you keep a log of watering, some require a timer automatic sprinkler system be used, some actually install a moisture detector to track whether it is watered enough, etc.

Of course, generally going to cost 25-50% more with a 6-12 month warranty.
