why do i have power in half a room and no power in other half ?

If about half the circuits throughout your house are out, then you have lost power to one of the two 120V lines that make up the 220/240V service to your house - somewhere from the utility to your breaker box. Something you should get an electrician to look at ASAP, and use as little power as possible till it is fixed, because that could indicate a broken connection which could short out or arc under use.

If only in one room, four likely causes:

1) that room has two (or more) circuits for outlets/lights and one has a broken wire or the breaker tripped out on one circuit - that dead one. Living rooms and similar large rooms (and kitchens) commonly have two outlet circuits on the assumption that a lot of electrical demand may occur simultaneously in that room - bedrooms commonly only have one circuit (which might actually serve several bedrooms).

2) that room has only one wall circuit, but somewhere along the line a wire has broken or been chewed or become disconnected - commonly a lead becomes disconnected at an outlet, especially if it is loose in the box and moves around when things are plugged in and unplugged.

3) a wall-outlet type GFCI is installed in mid-circuit and has tripped, cutting off power to that outlet and all outlets "downstream" of it, but outlets "upstream" (on the breaker panel side of the GFCI) are still getting power.

4) the circuit serves the whole room, but an outlet has broken or arced out internally AND the wiring was run "through the outlet" - with the hot wire coming into the outlet and then out of it to the rest of the circuit- so a failed outlet can cut off power to the rest of the room "downstream" on the circuit.

You might be able to trace the trouble using a plug-in $10 LED circuit tester - though if the live wire is out that does not help. Otherwise, you need an Electrician - your Search the List category. Or a Handyman if you trust one with electrical.
