If there is a well-defined nest, there are ant powders that work pretty well - you place it in the opening of the nest or immediately on their trails, and they take it home and feed the family on it and die - commonly pretty much the entire nest can be taken out in a week or so. Ortho makes several varieties that are specific to types of ants - sugar ants (usually type found in kitchen), meat eating ants (common in garden), and fire ants (red ones).

Keep an eye open around for the next 2 weeks, as the survivors who were away from the nest and did not go back in after deaths started will try to establish a new nest and generate a new queen.

You want the bait type, not the kill-on-contact type - that only kills the iones who actually walk in it.

Keep well protected from kids and pets and from rain/watering - cover with rockpile, log, etc.. Or an overturned wheelbarrow or a mower parked over it works pretty good too.
